SEMRush is a comprehensive suite of tools designed to enhance your SEO, SMM, and PPC efforts, and quite possibly one of the tools I talk most about, because of my extensive use with the product.

They offer a range of free and paid tools that help marketers to gain valuable insights into their online visibility, keyword trends, and a lot more.

It's also worth noting they run one of the biggest SEO education platforms in the industry - SEMRush Academy.

In this review, i'll dissect every feature SEMRush offers in their free and paid plans, as well as link you out to other articles on how to use each one.

SEMRush Academy

Before we move forward, I wanted to touch on SEMRush Academy, because it's a great place for beginners to start learning about digital marketing, SEO, selling online, they really cover a ton of topics.

You can either sign up for SEMRush Academy, or subscribe to their YouTube Channel - both offer great content for beginners and just people who want to sharpen their skills in general.

If you're a complete beginner, you should check out their catalogue and just enter whatever you're trying to learn, and it'll point you in the right direction by offering you courses around that topic.

SEMRush Twitter

Another highly overlooked source of great ideas and content is SEMRush's on Twitter.

They post a dozen times per day, and all their content is well thought out and actually helpful even for professionals like me.

Alright, enough with the ass kissing, let's get into the juicy stuff.

SEO Dashboard

Rush offers a free SEO Dashboard to streamline and simplify managing multiple sites, and also seeing their health at a glance.

The best thing is, everything you see here and more is free, you just sign up and follow their onboarding process.

It takes about 10 minutes to do but is pretty much a combination of Google Analytics & Google Search Console.

Domain AnalyticsProvides a comprehensive overview of a domain's search visibility, organic search traffic, and keyword rankings on search engines.
Site AuditAnalyzes a website's on-page and technical SEO issues, identifying errors and providing recommendations for improvements.
On Page SEO CheckerOffers suggestions for optimizing individual web pages for target keywords, considering factors like content, metadata, and user experience.
Backlink AuditEvaluates the quality and risk of a website's backlink profile, identifying potentially harmful links and suggesting actions to mitigate risks.

Top PageviewsLists the most visited pages on a website, providing data on unique pageviews, average time on page, and bounce rate.

I recommend you set this up as soon as possible if you haven't already, as recommended in my quickstart to niche sites, this dashboard gives you all your SEO metrics in one place, and integrates with Google Analytics & Search Console to provide you with those analytics too.

Especially if you don't have an alternative that shows you vital SEO components like your sites crawlability, on-page health, and back backlinks, all factors with huge implications on your rankings (check our SEO Checklist for beginners to make sure you've done this).

You can automat email alerts on any of these metrics, for example, you can make it alert you when your site has broken links, new toxic backlinks or rank changes.

I highly suggest you do set up email alerts, it's better to get alerted when things happen, rather than checking Google Search Console every few hours.

Domain Analytics

Domain Analytics is a small widget on your SEO dashboard that shows your site stats at a glance:

  • Authority Score - This is a metric made by SEMRush to measure overall quality of a domain, this includes backlinks, referring domains, organic traffic and other data. 100 is the highest score you can get.

  • Organic Traffic - This is how much organic traffic SEMRush expects you're getting based on your rankings in certain keywords.

  • Organic Keywords - These are your ranked keywords under rank 100.

  • Paid Keywords - These are keywords you're running ads for.

  • Referring Domains - The amount of domains referring to you (backlinks)

Site Audit

This is another great tool by SEMRush. It audits your website and shows you errors, warnings and notices of things you need to fix.

Errors and warnings are issues you should address immediately, most of the time they're detrimental to your rankings.

The Site Health gauge shows your sites health at a glance.

If you click on Errors/Warnings, or the Issues tab, you'll see a detailed rundown of your issues, with a note about how to fix them.

Sometimes they're simple issues that might not do much harm, but it'll often show you duplicate meta titles and descriptions, missing canonical, broken links, basically a ton of stuff you NEED to fix.

You can export these issues and give them to a specialist like myself, or do them yourself.

Statistics

The statistics page shows a detailed rundown of your page markup, crawl depth, sitemaps, HTTP status codes, canonicalization, hreflang usage, and internal links, all things you should be aware of whether you're running your own thing, or doing this for clients.

On-Page SEO Checker

This is another insanely powerful tool I personally use regularly, their Optimization Ideas tab, for example, click the SERP Features Ideas for some actually pretty valuable and simple ideas to improve your rank.

An aggregate rating to this page, and it claims that I'll appear in a featured snippet for this keyword.

It'll also give you ideas to improve your on-page, such as the example below. If it's giving you these ideas, these are things you could probably benefit from doing.

Backlink Audit

You can see a preview/summary of your sites backlink health from the SEO Dashboard, if you need to take further action, such as when you have some toxic/shitter links, you'll be shown these links, where you can download the disavow file and upload it to Google Search Console.

This is a great tool as you can definitely get penalized and lose ranks if you buy bad links or are the victim of negative SEO.
